Obituary

Mr. Oliver Matthews
Mr. Oliver Harrison Matthews, age 77, resident of Texarkana, Arkansas, and former resident of De Queen, passed away Monday, September 5, 2022, at Hospice of Texarkana in Texarkana, Texas.

Oliver was youngest child of Guy Walter and Opal Henry Matthews, born July 10, 1945, in De Queen. He was a 1963 graduate of the Horatio High School and married the love of his life, Leoda Jean Morris, on December 24, 1964, in Horatio. To this union, a son and daughter were born. Oliver worked as an Engineer for the De Queen and Eastern/Texas, Oklahoma, and Eastern Railroad, retiring in 2005 after more than thirty-three years of service. He and Leoda were members of the De Queen First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. After their move, Oliver and Leoda attended the Beech Street Baptist Church in Texarkana. Oliver thoroughly enjoyed traveling. He and Leoda traveled to every state except Alaska, including much of Canada in their motorhome. His favorite place, however, was the Rocky Mountain National Park. When he was not traveling, Oliver enjoyed time with the nursing home ministry, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Joyce Perimon.

Oliver leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of over 57 years, Leoda Matthews of Texarkana, Arkansas; his son and daughter-in-law, Guy and Kendra Matthews of Texarkana, Arkansas; his daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Mike Sims of West Fork, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Kara Klenk and husband Jordan of College Station, Texas, Kolton Matthews of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Matthew Cook of Rogers, Arkansas; two great-grandchildren, Emelia and Adaleigh Klenk; one sister-in-law, Jane Chandler of Horatio; as well as other relatives, and a host of friends.
