Mr. Gaines "Hal" Southworth
Mr. Gaines Harold Southworth, age 85, resident of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and former long-time resident of De Queen, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at the Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Gaines was born one of seven children to William Henry and Mary Lois McClanahan Southworth on July 16, 1937, in De Queen, Arkansas. He was a graduate of Ferriday High School, Ferriday, Louisiana, and went on to obtain his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of California, Los Angeles. Gaines later attended the McGeorge School of Law. On May 7, 1958, Gaines married the love of his life, Kathleen Carole Chastain, and to this union, three children were born. He faithfully served with the United States Marine Corps until his honorable discharge. Gaines worked a number of years for the United States Department of Justice as a Federal Police Office, and later worked for the United States Border Patrol until his retirement in 1977. Gaines and Carole returned to De Queen and later opened their furniture store, Southern Woods. Gaines later worked as a contractor until his final retirement. He and Carole were members of the Chapel Hill Baptist Church and Gaines enjoyed his many years coaching baseball, leading Cub and Boy Scouts, and serving as the Sevier County Election Judge and Chair for the Sevier County Republican Committee. Gaines was a former member of the Border Patrol Association, and Sevier County Sheriff's Posse. More than anything, Gaines cherished the time spent with loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of over fifty-five years, Carole Southworth; four brothers and five sisters-in-law, Wallace and Betty Southworth, Max and Maylene Southworth, Bill and Mae Southworth, Perry Southworth, and Martha Southworth; and one sister, Mary Southworth.
Gaines leaves to cherish his memory, two sons and daughters-in-law, Kurt and Debra Southworth of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Eric and Sara Southworth of Plainfield, Indiana; one daughter, AdriAnne Rush of De Queen; five grandchildren, Christopher Southworth, Shawn Shouthworth, Maximillian Southworth-Beckwith, Miles Beckwith, and Ivan Southworth; one great-grandchild, Amelia Southworth; one brother, Dan Southworth of De Queen; as well as niece, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
Funeral Services for Mr. Gaines Southworth will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 14, 2022, at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church with Bro. Keith Rose and Eric Southworth officiating. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen. The family will receive friends from 9:00 A.M., until service time at 11:00 A.M., Monday, at the church. You may leave a condolence online at www.chandlerfuneral.com.
