Obituary

Mrs. Evonne Daphine Blackmon 81, a devoted wife and mother, was called home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, March 12, 2025, in her home, surrounded by her family in Cabot, AR.

Evonne was born April 1, 1943 in Wickes, AR to her parents Samuel Alexander Powell and Eula Mae O'Rorke-Powell, whom both preceded her in death. Evonne's passing closes a final chapter within her family as she was the last of 14 children.

Evonne was a woman of unwavering faith and belief in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her love for the Lord shone through every aspect of her life. She found joy and strength through serving others, singing, praying, and reading the book that she loved the most, God's word, the Holy Bible. She was a member of New Life Church Cabot, AR. She was an amazing cook and no one ever left her home hungry. She loved to be surrounded by her children, grandchildren, family, and friends. She truly enjoyed being a homemaker and found joy in the routine of household chores, keeping her home clean and decorated. She could often be found long after her family went to bed lost in a good book that she just could not seem to put down. She loved to work in her yard, she did not claim to have a green thumb, but she would tell you that her secret to every tree, flower, or shrub that she planted was by planting it and speaking "the name Jesus" over it. She loved a good shopping trip even if she did not find anything to purchase.

Evonne, affectionately nicknamed "Dumpling" by her Sweetheart of 47 years, Odis Lee Blackmon, were married September 2, 1977, in Grannis, AR. They made their family home in Ashdown, AR in 1978 until they moved to Hooks, TX in 1990 to pastor Eastview Pentecostal Church. Although she and her husband were self-employed and the owners of Odis Machine Shop in Ashdown, AR for 38 years her primary devotion was to her family as a homemaker and to the congregation that she and her husband had the privilege to serve for 25 years. She loved both her family and her church family and it showed by the countless selfless acts of service that she showed them. Due to failing health conditions, Evonne and Odis moved to Cabot, AR in 2017 to be closer to family and their health care providers.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Odis Blackmon of Cabot, AR, her sons Randall (Sheila) Wheeler of Foreman, AR, Preston (Rowena) Wheeler of Cove, AR, Damon (Linda) Wheeler of Duluth, MN and a daughter Shanna (Jeff) Stroope of Austin, AR. She will be greatly missed by her 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Along with her parents, Evonne is preceded in death by her daughter Tammy Lynn Wheeler, her son Mitcheal Wayne Wheeler Jr, her grandchildren Quinton Wheeler, Parker Stroope, Asher Stroope, and Avery Stroope, 13 siblings, and a host of family members.
